EDUCATION

10 Jul 2021

in collaboration with the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin

‘Art often aims to be accessible to all. Ideally, the same should apply to science. I believe that this is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Through its interdisciplinary projects, LAS strives to create touchpoints with science, wants to explore ways to reach non-scientists and thereby contributes significantly to experiments with knowledge transfer.’

– Prof. Johannes Vogel
PhD, Leadership of the Museum für Naturkunde as its Director General

We are drawn to the unknown. Experimenting is key to the working methods of both art and science. Together LAS and the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin can encourage discussion about new modes of communication, eye-level dialogue and public engagement. How can we exchange scientific knowledge and at the same time raise fundamental questions about the intersection of this knowledge and the human experience? Especially in the age of the Anthropocene, a new epoch of a planet shaped by human activity, we are in need of finding new ways of collaborating to solve the challenges of both today and tomorrow. A stimulating dialogue between two distinct forms of critical thinking may lead to a new culture of knowledge and learning.

The visionary and imaginative power of art and the knowledge perspective of science can inspire each other. Wetlands in and around Berlin and the Panke river are a perfect system for such a collaborative endeavour. Fostering understanding of science as a process and activating participation is at the heart of the knowledge transfer we are pursuing. It is our shared goal to empower society to take action ‘für Natur’. With our WissensFluss programmes such as guided tours through wetlands - both in-person and digital - and diverse workshops and events, we aim to reach out and connect to people. The free Naturblick platform and synchronised app offer all the exciting information needed to explore the urban nature of Berlin and beyond without limitations.

For further information on the upcoming events and to register visit the WissensFluss website.

WissensFluss @Spreewald

Along the water channels of the Spreewald, the project WissensFluss takes you to the origins of Berl-Berl. 'Berl', the Slavic word for swamp, is considered the origin of the word 'Berlin' and is the inspiration for the title of Jakob Kudsk Steensen's exhibition Berl-Berl at the Halle am Berghain. It revives lost perspectives on the marshlands by connecting Berlin's current marshlands, the species and mythologies that once inhabited them. Philipp Juranek links this virtual world to the special characteristics of this natural habitat, its biodiversity and the historical context of this unique body of water. The focus is on illustrating ecological connections using various examples from the bird world.Philipp Juranek has loved birds ever since he can remember. To this day, there is nothing in the world that makes his heart beat as fast as our birds. But it doesn't always have to be the rare or somehow special species that trigger this special feeling of happiness in Philipp - even the chaffinch or the sparrow that you meet almost every day can do it. That's the great thing about bird love: happiness is waiting everywhere, around the next corner - and it wants to be discovered. The 31-year-old filmmaker and podcaster is particularly fond of the Spreewald; after many years in Berlin, he has now settled in the countryside and lives in the south of Brandenburg.Date: 11.09.21 in German 18.09.21 in GermanTime: 9:00 - 12:00 amFor families with children (recommended from 12 years), young people and adults.
