LAS presents BerlBerl.world
Jakob Kudsk Steensen, Berl-Berl (2021). Live simulation (still). Courtesy of the artist.
In conjunction with his LAS commissioned exhibition at Halle am Berghain, artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen takes over LAS Online to create an online experience of Berl-Berl.
The exhibition Berl-Berl and online experience BerlBerl.world starts with a swamp as its protagonist – its ecosystem, history and mythologies – and pays tribute to Berlin's origin as a wetland that formed over 10,000 years ago, and was drained in the 1700s. ‘Berl’, the ancient Slavic word for ‘swamp’, is thought to be the origin of ‘Berlin’ and gives the exhibition its name.
Berl-Berl is an immersive installation that transforms Berlin's Halle am Berghain into a virtual swamp. Visitors to the immersive world on berlberl.world experience what is on view at Halle am Berghain. What is unfolding in the exhibition at Halle am Berghain is live-streamed to BerlBerl.world. It is a real-time live simulation running in a game engine.
To explore Berl-Berl online, scroll the Triglav: a deity that represents the three dimensions of Slavic cosmology: heaven, earth, and the underworld.
